by Keith A. Milam

Guidebook 22 offers a useful tool to aid anyone in exploring what is now known as the Serpent Mound Impact Structure. The name derives from the Paleo-Indian effigy mound in the shape of a snake, located in the southwestern portion of the crater on a site of higher elevation than the surrounding landscape. The guidebook primes readers by examining the process of how an impact crater is formed. Explorers can visit the nine field stops to understand the impact site in detail. Beginning outside the crater, readers get a close look at how the rocks of the area are supposed to appear. Explorers then move to the rim and into the crater to see how the rocks appear post-impact. The field trip includes a visit to the Serpent Mound State Memorial and a final stop at the crater's central peak. Also featuring many full-color maps and illustrations, and a handy glossary, the guidebook provides geologists of all ages with the information needed to explore one of Ohio's most fascinating geologic sites.
